Haiti: Hated or Loved?

Posted on January 31st, 2010

Bertrand Russell, a 20th Century atheistic philosopher, claimed that no one could sit by the bedside of a child with a terminal disease and believe in a loving God. 1
A question that is surely being asked now: “Can a world created by a loving, omnipotent God experience devastating earthquakes as the magnitude 7.0 in Haiti [...]

Give Me Liberty, Or…

Posted on January 16th, 2010

The apostle Paul encouraged Timothy not to faint or falter in his work of faith. “Endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Tim. 2:3). “Endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist” (2 Tim. 4:5). It is easy to preach before admiring and receptive audiences. It is not difficult to reprove, rebuke, [...]

Preaching Tips

Posted on January 10th, 2010

Don’t let the well get empty. Read the Bible every day.
Preach the Word. Get out of the way and let the sacred text do the work.
Preach the whole counsel of God – and don’t eliminate anything that is needed, even if It’s not popular (Acts 20:20, 27).
Stop where the text stops (1 Peter 4:11). Your [...]

Before We Criticize

Posted on January 2nd, 2010

By Bill Hall
There are times when mistakes are made and things need to be pointed out. And, unfortunately, we all know that offering criticism can sometimes make a bad situation even worse. Serious thought needs to go into what we will say. Maybe it would help if we would ask the following questions before offering [...]

The Lighter Side of Preaching

Posted on October 30th, 2009

In the early 1980s, I was preaching in southeastern California in the desert town of Indio, where the summer heat often hits 115% (and higher). The air conditioner was frequently overtaxed. On one hot day, when the unit failed completely, the temperature in the meeting house reminded us why we didn’t want to go to hell. Right before I got up to preach, Jim Burruss led the song – I think it was an unintentional coincidence – “In the desert of sorrow and sin… I thirst, let me drink…”

How Love Acts and Reacts

Posted on May 17th, 2009

Paul tells us how love acts and reacts. “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, [...]

The Power of the Resurrection Today

Posted on April 12th, 2009

Today we do not offer a passion play or sunrise services – but we do want to take advantage of an opportunity while the subject is hot on people’s minds… why the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead still matters.

The atheist Richard Dawkins: “Accounts of Jesus’s resurrection and ascension are about as well documented [...]

What Happens When We Die?

Posted on March 7th, 2009

“It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Heb. 9:27).

Various Christians have asked me what exactly happens when we die? When people die, the spirit separates from the body and enters the afterlife (Ja. 2:26, Ecc. 12:7). Disembodied spirits go to Hades (realm of the [...]
