What’s Your Hymn?

Truthseekers, SCCOC, Church of Christ Santa Clara hymn singing

I am convinced that there is a hymn to meet every need and challenge you face in life.  Perhaps the following account (which I heard Brother Wendell Winkler share several years ago) helps to establish that point.

A preacher presented a lesson on how Christians must commit themselves to serving in the church.  The song leader got up and led the song, “I Shall Not Be Moved.”

The next week, the preacher spoke about how Christians must give to the church and do so sacrificially.  The song leader led, “Jesus Paid It All.”

The next Sunday, the preacher took on gossip and the need for Christians to watch their tongue.  The song leader led, “I Love to Tell the Story.”

The preacher was getting frustrated.  The next Sunday he told the church that he was thinking about resigning.  The song leader led, “O Why Not Tonight?”

The preacher was done, so he resigned the next Sunday, telling the church that Jesus had brought him there and Jesus was leading him away from there.  The song leader got up and led, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

So, would you agree that there could be a hymn to fit any situation you may face in your life?  Let’s consider a few.

Are you troubled?  Maybe cumbered with a load of care?  Just remember, “Precious Savior, still our refuge—Take it to the Lord in prayer.”

Do you feel like nobody cares?  Never forget, “O yes, He cares, I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief…I know my Savior cares.”

Do you ever feel alone?  “I know that Jesus is well and alive today, He makes His home in my heart.  Never more will I be all alone since He promised me that we never would part.”

Are you burdened and weighed down with life’s challenges?  “Do you know my Jesus?  Do you know my friend?  Have you heard He loves you?  And that He will abide til the end?”

Are you uncertain about the direction of life?  “If I walk in heaven’s light, shun the wrong and do the right, I know the Lord will find a way for me.”

Are you having trouble sleeping, while worrying about tomorrow?  “Many things about tomorrow, I don’t seem to understand; But I know who holds tomorrow, and I know who holds my hand.”

Are you happy?  “Lift your voice and praise Him in song; Sing and be happy today!”

Find your hymn!  Sing it!  Let God comfort your heart!
