Coursing through the desert of dying humanity is the overflowing river of the love of God. Out of the dearth, death, and decay produced by the burning rays of sin, there springs the bloom of eternal bliss, borne aloft on the waves of the love of God.
In poem and paragraph, in song and sonnet, we can praise that which we cannot completely comprehend. Yet, with simple, inimitable skill the Spirit’s pen expresses its unfathomable grace:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (Jn. 3:16). In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 Jn. 4:9, 10). “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).
God’s love give his gospel its uniqueness. Where in the annals of law, logic, or philosophy do you find unmerited, undeserved love as the prime motivating force which provides limitless, grace and goodness? Whenever a lost soul through the Spirit’s words is drawn to learn of this vast expanse, his repentance toward the Lord is nigh at hand (Rom. 2:4).
The world outside God’s extended grace is a desert. Its wisdom is a mirage. But there lies an oasis marked by the cross to which men may come and take of the water of life freely (Rev. 22:17). We bid all that are athirst to come and sup with us in the reservoir of the love of God.
